A Dangerous Education

Now, I’m not a shop owner as of yet. Plans in the future… but I’m not really qualified to make an assessment of how my shop might work. My speciality coffee experience, however, does lie with a very dextrous little mom-and-pop operation which is more than ready to impress a knowledgeable customer. Hoffman’s not wrong, educated customers will be more easy to disappoint.

You Just Got Served... Coffee... Sir

Firstly, if you want to read a professional blog on the topic, I recommend this one. It’s my boss’s but I don’t get brownie points for it. His is more like an article… mine is an unprofessional rant which he doesn’t get to have a say in. Fun though. I’ve seen a ton of things about coffee service recently. Most of it has been pretty piss-poor. I’m pretty new to coffee; I’m not a business owner, I’m not a customer service expert. Then again, most people aren’t. I actually serve speciality coffee to the general public, which is more than I can say about most people doling out advice.

Light in the Tunnel

So yeah… I had a job at a fairly substandard café. Let’s call it Matt’s Café. If I’m perfectly honest… I didn’t hate it. In fact, I quite liked it. It was us versus the customer. It’s not good business, sure, but it did feel good. I liked the people I worked with, and I liked that it wasn’t a giant multinational corporation. A bump in the road...

So yes, I had an excellent coffee, in this nerdy shop. Big whoop. Well, I didn’t have much for hobbies… so it was a pretty enriching experience for me. I immediately sent an email to the owners just dripping with saccharine praise. To be honest, it was probably a bit stomach churning… I’m pretty sure it was vaguely sexual at parts… it was weird. At the end I asked if they were hiring. Unsurprisingly, they said, “no”.

The Coffee Shrine

Indulge me, just a bit, as I gush about this shop… it’s going to be awful. Especially considering my bias now that I work there… My first time in was like coming home. I could not fully appreciate the magnitude of the things that were accomplished in the shop, because it was simply over my head at the time. Yet in front of me, were things that I had only read about in legends… or, you know, online and stuff. There was a Japanese cold brew coffee tower in the window. I honestly thought about 30 people in the UK even knew what that thing was (again, I was quite ignorant), yet there was one just dripping away in the window. Inside, intrigue only deepened.
